There are only three items you need to perform credit repair (a.k.a. credit report disputing) on your own: 1) Documentation that proves you are yourself, 2) a current copy of your credit report and 3) a template for a dispute letter. There is nothing more to it beyond this! And after you have those two things, the remainder of the process can be easily tackled on your own.
There’s no need to give a credit repair service hundreds of dollars to do what you can do on your own. Did you know that fixing your credit on your own (self credit repair) is even the preferred method recommended by the US government? Look over FTC.com if you would like to read it for yourself.
And while you are on that website, you may as well copy the sample of credit repair letters they offer there too. It will work as well as any of the abundance of other similar sample letters you can find all over the internet. The only thing you need to do is take any sample letter you want, customize it to the accounts you want to dispute, put it with a copy of you ID documentation, and mail it to the appropriate reporting agencies.
What kind of identification documents am I talking about? You will need a copy of your picture identification, a photocopy of your social security card, and a` photocopy of a household bill or other document that displays your correct address and name. That’s it! Just make certain all those documents are photocopied with perfect clearness (or they’ll send it back and demand clearer ID).
Regarding the credit report, getting one should be easy. If you have recently been turned down for a loan, you ought to be able to receive a copy of the credit report your lender pulled on you. Failing that, you can still get one for free by dialing 1-877-322-8228, or you could get one from the following address:
Annual Credit Report Request Service
P.O. Box 105281
Atlanta, GA 30348-5281
The FTC’s site also assures you that everyone is allowed one free copy of their credit report each year, so if you haven’t gotten one yet, ask for one. Forget paying a credit repair agency to do what you can do on your own. The only items you should have to pay for are the printing costs for the letters and the postage to send them out with.
